Lockport considers prohibiting sale of psychoactive drug or its analog

Mayor Steven Streit | City of Lockport

The Lockport City Council is set to deliberate on an amendment to the city code aimed at prohibiting the sale of psychoactive drugs, including kratom and any products with a THC concentration greater than 0%. The proposed ordinance also targets novel synthetic drugs and chemical analogs of kratom or other novel psychoactive substances.

According to the city council agenda for October 16, these substances have been linked to severe effects such as hallucinations, agitation, psychosis, aggression, suicidal thoughts, and even death. The agenda further states that there has been a notable increase in medical emergencies related to these drugs and warns of potential rises in associated criminal activities. It notes that Orland Park and Tinley Park have already enacted ordinances banning these substances due to delays in state and federal legislation, which manufacturers often circumvent by altering product compositions.

The agenda packet specifies that during a special meeting, the ordinance was revised to include penalties for violations. These penalties include a minimum fine of $1,000 and the potential suspension or revocation of any city-issued permits or licenses.

The City of Lockport City Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, at 7 p.m., on the third floor board room at city hall.

Additionally, the council will consider adopting a design for an official city flag. This initiative was spearheaded by Zachary Dylkiewicz, a Boy Scout from Troop 63. In May 2024, Dylkiewicz presented his proposal after forming the Lockport Flag Committee over the summer. The committee narrowed down ten designs to two finalists; one option will be discussed at the upcoming meeting.
