Fifteen drafting and design students from Lockport Township High School District 205 showcased their skills at the Illinois Design Educators Association (IDEA) State Competition, held on April 12 at Illinois State University. Competing in eight categories, the students earned a record five state championships and three second-place finishes, the highest in the school's history. These results bring LTHS's total to 17 IDEA State Championships.
To qualify for the state competition, each student placed either first or second at the regional level. The event featured both individual and team divisions, challenging students to apply their technical skills, creativity, and precision.
In individual CAD contests, participants solved and illustrated complex design problems within a strict two-hour limit. In team competitions, students worked since January on real-world design challenges. They presented their research, technical drawings, physical models, and solutions to a panel of judges, including architects and engineers.
The state champions included the Architecture Design Team, featuring Gavin Nusko, Aubree Tovar, and Mara Kubis. Aubree and Mara repeated their state title. Other first-place winners were Gavin Monreal in 3D Architecture, Nathaniel Rowell in 2D Machine CAD, Stephen Reuter in 3D Machine CAD, and Duncan Kenney-Benson in 3D Assembly Modeling.
Second-place finishers included David Krzysiak in 3D CAD Modeling, the Engineering Design Team, consisting of Kyle Stevens, Joseph Stroner, and Jackson Maloney, and Maha Dissi in Introductory CAD.
Instructors Jeff Brown and Rodger Ebert have been praised for their guidance and commitment to technical education, contributing to the program's success.
A statement offered congratulations to the student designers for their achievements and representation of the school.
